Nicki Minaj, New Song Tragedy (Lil Kim Diss)

Lil Kim, Nicki Minaj

As you might have noticed already, I love Nicki Minaj. She’s an amazing musician with real attitude, a great body and understanding of what it means to be a role model. I’m a mother to a teenage girl, and I really respect Nicki Minaj not only as a woman, but as a mother. She knows that girls look up to her for guidance in their lives, and I like the fact that she cares about that.

Obviously no one’s perfect though, and that’s something celebrities have to deal with every day. If they don’t live up to people’s expectations or behave perfectly then the media will pick up on it and trash them, which is a shame really because celebrities are people too!

Recently though, Nicki Minaj has been caught up in a battle that she didn’t ask for with another female rapper (and legend!) Lil’ Kim. Lil’ Kim was Nicki Minaj’s role model up until recently, and for some reason Lil’ Kim took a real disliking to her. Well, either that or the media has just geared it all in one direction – but I guess we’ll never know the complete truth about that…

As far as their feud goes though, I can honestly say that Nicki Minaj is handling herself well. Lil’ Kim has blasted her at every given occasion, cussing about her onstage and releasing songs attacking her, and Nicki Minaj, although not rolling over, is definitely being more classy about everything.

Nicki Minaj’s recently given an interview at Hot 97’s VIP Lounge about this ongoing battle saying she used to idolize Lil’ Kim, always praising her in her interviews until Lil’ Kim came out and dissed her… She said something that really made sense to me:

“But you want to know what scares people? Success. When you don’t make moves and when you don’t climb up the ladder, everybody loves you because you’re not competition. When you become competition, people start…’hold on wait?’, so I felt like, you’re going to go down in history now as a sore loser as opposed to going down in history as the Queen because if you can’t beat em, join em. If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all. You don’t have to feel the need to put somebody down to make yourself feel better.

It’s like when you see Gaga, you see Madonna, but Madonna never hated on Gaga. Why in the black community, we got to hate on each other instead of saying ‘Thank you for showing me love, thank you for keeping my name alive.’ You know, the same way she opened doors for me, I’m now opening doors for you. Do you understand? Because nobody was even playing your music and you damn sure couldn’t get an interview to save your life. But now you’re getting interviews and now every interview you do, they asking you about Nicki Minaj.

So it’s like we help each other, that’s the point, we’re helping each other. But if you are bitter…get a life.”

I think it’s really interesting that she’s so mature about this despite the fact she’s the younger woman, and I also think the point she made about Lil’ Kim using this fight to get popular again is really true. Now everyone’s talking about both of them, so the fact she says they’re helping each other goes to show how silly and fickle the media world is… By slagging each other off they’re making headlines, and by making headlines they’re selling records. But Nicki Minaj is definitely wiser and more respectable in this case because she’s not being distasteful or crass.

Recently Nicki Minaj’s released a new song called Tragedy, which is in response to Lil’ Kim’s attack on her where she called her a ‘Kim Clone’ in her track Black Friday, which is about as aggressive as Nicki’s been so far, but her humor about the whole situation really just shows that she’s winning. She doesn’t need to be bitter and angry and jealous – she’s the new hot Queen rapper and sometimes the old ones just take a while to crawl away and retire… I think I know how this story will play out – with Nicki Minaj on top! – but we’ll have to wait and see I suppose because these days you never can tell!

  • Did you see that youtube video where Drizzy dissed Lil’ and called Nicki the baddest chick to ever do rap? That’s my favorite. I think the old dogs need to make way for the next generation.

  • It’s sad to see Lil’ Kim act like this. She should have some respect for those new to the game and retire on her good reputation. Instead she’s just making herself look bad.

  • I love Nicki n’ I think how she’s handlin’ this is really mature. I’m sure when this blows over she’ll be number 1.
